Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science of construction which dictates the importance of construction and direction of every part of the external structure of a building. Modern architects follow building codes. However, Vastu Shastra follows tried and tested ancient principles derived from nature and its undeniable impact on our lives. This ancient science is not just limited to the exterior of homes and buildings but also the interiors to gain maximum results.

Vastu Shastra is not a superstitious belief system but science that work towards creating a harmonious living space by balancing the five basic elements of earth, water, fire, air and space. Just like any soothing, calming interior décor, an interior arrangement that satisfies the Vastu principles improves the quality of life of the dwellers. While we will always be on the backfoot when it comes to space in our cramped urban condos, however, small changes can be easily incorporated within the interiors based on principles of Vastu.

Every room has eight directions and elements placed in each direction will have some kind of effect by creating an energy field. One important fundamental of Vastu Shastra is that the entrance of the house should be in the East, in conjunction with the rising of the sun. However, there are instances where a home is constructed as per Vastu principals, but the interiors were not included, and therefore, such properties do not fully reap the benefits of this ancient practice.

How to meet the Vastu requirements inside your homes?

Let’s see the impact of some elements of décor on the homeowner:

· Location of the kitchen area is directly connected to the health and wealth of the family.

· Décor of the bedroom along with the placement of the various elements affects personal relationships and health.

· Peace, harmony and prosperity have a direct correlation between where the pooja room lies and how the sanctum is placed.

· Mirrors are not just for grooming, but in Vastu, their placement has a special significance on health and happiness.

· The placement and position of each piece of furniture can either create a harmonious energy flow or imbalance that can disrupt peaceful existence.

· Location of the wet area or water area is crucial for hygiene and keeps sickness away; water should be stored in copper vessels.

· Vastu also outlines the colours that are auspicious for different sections in the house, for optimal impact.

· The reading or study space must face East while one should not sleep facing the North.

· Although modern homes have ambient and dim lights, Vastu is against the idea of using dim lights anywhere in the home.

· Any picture or image that showcases a negative event must be strictly avoided within the décor of the house; for instance, dead animals, barren trees, and so on.

While you can take advantage of informative astrology articles on reputed sites such as Astroswamig, for specific and greater effect, you can consult a Vastu expert, who can chart out the positioning of various elements within your home to bring the homeowners the best of health, and prosperity. Experts recommend that colours of the wall, entrance door, arrangement of furniture and placement of the temple or sanctum, are the most important aspects. Try it yourself and share your experiences with us. I’m certain you won’t be disappointed.
